How much do you use the paddle when you are actually surfing?
Seems there 2 distinct styles, with or without the use of the paddle.

I often ' forget' to use the paddle, but I am also new to this thing.

Gradually, you will begin to 'steer' in the wave with the paddle.  At first, most people (newbies to any form of surfing) are happy just to be standing up and riding.  As your confidence grows, you will begin to use the paddle to 'dig' into the water and steer your board more.  Enjoy......  Cheesy

I tell my friends that it's similar to your ski poles. You use your paddle to touch the wave, know where it is, initiate turns, catch your falls. And as you get better, you lean on it a lot to really lay your board over.
