I'm hearing some good stuff about the D.R. for surfing, especially in winter - anyone been before and especially as SUP is now my preferred form, suitable anywhere on the island for it?

Cabarete for surfing and Encuentro for shortboards, longboards, etc.  Stayed there last February and there were definitely a couple of guys paddling out at the beach for kiting and in the bay of the town itself - think it's called Bozo Beach.  My fella went out once there (main bay) and had a blast.

Very happy to answer that question.  First of all, the DR has a great spot for SUP - in practically any conditions, Bozo Beach has a real nice break for SUP.  At the moment, there are so few people with SUP's that you will be alone on the reef most days.  We have SUP's for rental at our surf hotel (which opens December 1st 2009).  Our accommodation is priced very reasonably; as low as $25 USD per night.  You can check us out on www.Swellsurfcamp.com

I loved the DR when I was there years ago, probably excellent SUP on the outer reefs there.

IS that where you go Swell surf camp?

We are out on Bozo Beach, which is directly Cabarete centre.  The amazing thing is that given how good the conditions are, there's no-one else out.  Sometimes, it is me alone and some days one or two others, but it's a huge ridable area + you can go 'down wind' to SUP on kite beach and if you are feeling really energetic, all the way to Encuentro (although, you'd better get a ride back).  Really, it's a fantastic gem of a spot.

Dave, that's not good.  The thing about the south coast is that it does not receive the north swells from the Atlantic that we get on the north coast here in Cabarete.  I'm attaching 3 photos we took 2 months ago when Hurricane Bill passed by us.  Gives you an idea about the size of the waves - a really good winter north or north east swell will be 2x overhead.  They normally begin October and end around April.  It's pretty flat here right now though but we're all in anticipation.

For the discounts; you can always ask me via the  website www.swellsurfcamp.com
